Getting Around Amsterdam
Cycling is the preferred local transport with an excellent bike lane network. Metro, trams, and buses cover the city. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is a major European hub.

Airport access
- Schiphol (AMS) ↗ A major hub with the rail station directly under the terminal: NS trains to Amsterdam Centraal in ~17 min, plus bus 397 (Amsterdam Express) to the centre.
Good to know for newcomers
- Tap any contactless bank card or phone (OVpay) on trams, metro, buses and NS trains — no need to buy the old OV-chipkaart; always tap OUT too.
- Forgetting to tap out charges you a high default fare — make it a habit on every mode, including NS trains.
- Seriously consider a bike — for most trips inside the ring it is faster than the tram, and a second-hand or OV-fiets bike is cheap.
- From Schiphol the NS train is the obvious choice — direct to Centraal in ~17 minutes for a few euros, far cheaper than a taxi.
Commuting & where to live
- Rent inside the canal ring is the steepest; neighbourhoods like Oost, West and Noord (a free ferry from Centraal) balance cost against a short commute.
- Because the city is small and flat, commute time is often set by your bike, not transit — many residents never buy a transit pass at all.
- Working elsewhere in the Randstad (Utrecht, The Hague, Rotterdam) is a realistic NS-train commute — factor the rail season ticket into rent trade-offs.
- Owning a car in the centre is impractical and expensive (permits, scarce parking) — most households go car-free by design.
