Getting Around Bangkok

- BTS Skytrain ↗ Elevated lines (Sukhumvit + Silom) over the traffic, serving the main shopping, business and nightlife areas; tap on with a Rabbit card or contactless.
- MRT subway ↗ Underground Blue and Purple lines interchange with the BTS at several points; a separate MRT card or contactless card pays the fare.
- Buses, boats & tuk-tuks City buses are very cheap; Chao Phraya express boats and khlong canal boats skip road traffic; tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis fill short hops.
- Taxis & Grab Metered taxis are cheap but slow in jams; Grab (and Bolt) are the reliable app option; motorbike taxis (orange vests) are fastest through gridlock.

Good to know for newcomers
- A contactless EMV bank card now works on both BTS and MRT — it saves juggling the separate Rabbit and MRT cards newcomers used to need.
- Traffic is severe — for anything on a BTS/MRT line, the train beats a taxi at peak by a wide margin.
- Always insist on the meter in a taxi, or just use Grab/Bolt for an upfront price and no haggling.
- From Suvarnabhumi the Airport Rail Link is cheap and dodges the highway jams; from Don Mueang the SRT Red Line or A1 bus are the budget routes.
Commuting & where to live
- Rent near a BTS/MRT station carries a clear premium but is worth it — living off the rail lines means depending on traffic-bound roads.
- Sukhumvit and Silom/Sathorn (on the BTS) are the priciest; areas along the MRT Blue Line or the outer BTS extensions cut rent sharply.
- Judge a condo by its walk to the station in the heat — 700 m feels far at midday, and a covered skywalk connection is a real plus.
- Transport is cheap relative to income — the housing decision is about commute time and heat, not fare.
