Getting Around Dubai
Dubai Metro Red + Green Lines cover main commercial areas. NOL card accepted. Car or Uber is needed in suburban areas. Dubai International Airport is among the world's busiest.
Main transport
- Metro ↗ Driverless Red and Green lines along the main urban spine — the Red Line runs the length of Sheikh Zayed Road; Gold Class and women-and-children cabins available.
- Tram, buses & marine The Dubai Tram serves the Marina; RTA buses cover areas off the rail spine; abras and ferries cross the Creek and the Marina.
- Taxis & ride-hailing Metered RTA taxis are plentiful (flag-down ≈ AED 5–12 depending on time and pickup); Careem and Uber operate widely.
- Driving A car-first city: many residents end up driving — fuel is cheap, but factor in Salik road tolls (≈ AED 4–6 per gate) and parking.

Airport access
- Dubai International (DXB) ↗ One of the few mega-hubs right inside the city: the Red Line metro stops at Terminals 1 & 3 (early morning to around midnight); taxis run 24/7.
Good to know for newcomers
- Buy a silver nol card (AED 25 including AED 19 credit) at any metro station — it covers metro, tram, buses and abras, and the AED 14 daily cap applies automatically.
- Mind the etiquette fines — no eating or drinking anywhere on the network, and the marked cabins (Gold Class, women & children) are enforced.
- The metro spine is linear — live and work along it and transit is excellent; off the spine, budget for taxis or a car.
- Summer heat is a real transport factor — a walk that is pleasant in January is brutal in August; check the station-to-door distance before renting.
Commuting & where to live
- Pick housing by metro geography: Red Line districts (Marina, JLT, Business Bay, Deira) allow car-free living; villa communities generally do not.
- Sheikh Zayed Road traffic peaks hard — along the spine, the metro often beats driving at rush hour.
- If you drive, price the full stack — Salik tolls, parking and insurance; the AED 350 all-zones pass is far cheaper than running a car.
- Cycling tracks are growing (Marina, Downtown) but the heat limits them most of the year — indoor metro plus taxi remains the default mix.
