Getting Around Hong Kong

MTR covers all of HK. Octopus card works on MTR/bus/minibus/ferry. Taxis start at HK$27. Airport Express to KCK or Hong Kong Station takes ~24 min.

Main transport

  • MTR Heavy-rail lines plus Light Rail cover Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories; trains every 2–4 minutes at peak.
  • Buses & minibuses KMB and Citybus double-deckers run territory-wide; green minibuses serve fixed local routes — all paid with Octopus.
  • Trams & Star Ferry The “ding-ding” double-deck trams run along Hong Kong Island’s north shore for a flat fare of a few HK dollars; the Star Ferry crosses the harbour.
  • Taxis Red (urban), green (New Territories) and blue (Lantau) taxis are metered and relatively affordable compared with London or New York.

Typical costs

MTR single (Octopus) ≈ HK$4–30 for most urban trips by distance (cross-harbour at the upper end)
Bus & tram Bus ≈ HK$3–10 by route; tram flat fare ≈ HK$3 — all on Octopus
Airport Express HK$65–110 with Octopus by station (Tsing Yi / Kowloon / Hong Kong); walk-up single tickets cost more
Airport buses “A” routes ≈ HK$18–40 — slower than the Airport Express but far cheaper, reaching most of the territory directly

Airport access

  • Hong Kong International (HKG) The Airport Express reaches Kowloon in ~22 minutes and Hong Kong station (Central) in ~24; “A” buses and taxis serve the whole territory.

Good to know for newcomers

  • Get an Octopus card (or add one to your phone) on day one — it pays for the MTR, buses, trams, ferries, minibuses and most shops.
  • The MTR is the default for almost everything; last trains run around 00:30–01:00, after which it is taxis or night buses.
  • Airport “A” buses are the budget route into town — a fraction of the Airport Express price, with direct routes to most districts.
  • Transport is cheap by global-city standards — it is rent, not commuting, that will dominate your budget.

Commuting & where to live

  • Most residents live along an MTR line — being five minutes from a station is worth more to many renters than extra floor space.
  • Kowloon and the New Territories (Sha Tin, Tseung Kwan O, Tuen Mun) cut rent sharply versus Hong Kong Island, with MTR commutes of 20–45 minutes.
  • Cross-harbour commutes are easy on the MTR but slow by road at rush hour — check which side of the harbour your office is on before renting.
  • Fares are low enough that commuting cost rarely drives the housing decision — travel time and the harbour crossing do.
