Getting Around Kuala Lumpur

LRT + MRT + Monorail cover the core. Touch'n Go card accepted everywhere. KLIA Ekspres to KLIA airport takes ~28 minutes.

Main transport

• LRT, MRT & Monorail ↗ Rapid KL runs the LRT, MRT and Monorail across the Klang Valley; interchanges knit them together, and one Touch ’n Go card taps every line.
• KTM Komuter & buses KTM Komuter regional trains reach the wider suburbs; Rapid KL and MRT feeder buses connect neighbourhoods to the nearest station.
• KLIA Ekspres & Transit The ERL airport trains run from KL Sentral to both airport terminals — non-stop Ekspres in ~33 min, or the cheaper Transit with a few stops.
• Grab & taxis Grab is the default for door-to-door trips and cheap by regional standards; the sprawling, hot city makes it a common complement to the rail lines.

Airport access

• KLIA Terminal 1 & 2 (KUL) ↗ One airport, two terminals ~50 km south (T2/klia2 is the low-cost/AirAsia hub): KLIA Ekspres/Transit from KL Sentral, plus airport coaches and Grab.

Good to know for newcomers

• Get a Touch ’n Go card (or the eWallet) — it pays for every rail line, most buses, tolls and many shops.
• If you commute, the RM50 MY50 pass pays for itself within a week or two and covers every Rapid KL line.
• Rapid KL rail does NOT go to KLIA — take the KLIA Ekspres/Transit or a coach from KL Sentral instead.
• Heat and afternoon downpours make covered walkways matter — pick a home within a short, sheltered walk of a station.

Commuting & where to live

• Rent tracks rail access: KLCC and Bangsar cost most, while MRT/LRT suburbs (Kelana Jaya, Cheras, Kajang) cut rent for a 30–50 min ride.
• The city is spread out — living on the same line as your workplace beats living “close” but off the rail, where you depend on jams and Grab.
• Many condos bundle a station link bridge or feeder-bus stop — a real time-saver worth checking before you sign.
• Owning a car is common but adds tolls, fuel and parking — the MY50 pass plus Grab is a cheaper car-free baseline for rail-linked areas.
