Getting Around Kyoto

Municipal subway + buses + JR + Hankyu + Keihan; ICOCA works across them. Dense bus network (limited subway in the historic core). ~30 min to Osaka, ~2.2 h to Tokyo by Shinkansen. Kansai (KIX).

Main transport

• City buses ↗ The backbone for sightseeing — a dense network reaches most temples and districts at a flat central fare; buses get crowded in peak season.
• Subway (2 lines) The Karasuma (N–S) and Tozai (E–W) lines are fast and beat road traffic, but only cover the main axes — buses and trains fill the rest.
• JR & private railways JR (incl. the Nara/Sagano lines), Hankyu and Keihan connect Kyoto with Osaka, Nara and the suburbs; the Randen tram serves the western temples.
• Cycling & taxi Flat and compact, Kyoto is excellent for cycling; taxis are plentiful and useful for temple clusters buses reach slowly.

Airport access

• Kansai International (KIX) ↗ Kyoto has no airport of its own — KIX is the international gateway, ~75 min by JR Haruka; Osaka Itami (domestic) is ~55 min by limousine bus.

Good to know for newcomers

• Get an ICOCA — it covers buses, the subway, JR and private railways across Kansai with one tap.
• For a full day of temple-hopping the ¥1,100 Subway & Bus pass usually pays off after four rides.
• Buses jam in peak season and near major sights — the subway or a bike is often faster along the main axes.
• Living in Kyoto but working in Osaka (or vice-versa) is common — Hankyu/Keihan/JR make it a 30–45 min commute.

Commuting & where to live

• Rent is lower than Osaka or Tokyo; central Nakagyo/Shimogyo cost most, while Karasuma or Tozai subway stops balance access and price.
• Because the subway is only two lines, a home near a bus hub or JR/Hankyu station often beats a subway-only spot.
• Cycling is a genuine daily-commute option in the flat, compact centre — many residents rely on a bike plus occasional transit.
• Employer commuter-pass reimbursement (teiki) is standard — factor it in when comparing Kyoto vs a cheaper commuter base.
