Getting Around London

Tube (11 lines) + Elizabeth Line cover the whole city. Oyster card/contactless. Dense bus network. Black Cabs and Uber available.

Main transport

• London Underground (Tube) ↗ 11 lines run by TfL; tap contactless or phone (Oyster works too) with automatic daily fare caps.
• Elizabeth line & Overground Full-size cross-city trains — the fastest way east–west (Elizabeth line) and around inner London (Overground).
• Buses Flat fare with the Hopper (unlimited changes within one hour); the cheapest way to travel, and they run all night.
• National Rail Commuter trains serve the wider southeast; contactless pay-as-you-go works on most routes inside the fare zones.
• Cycling & taxis Santander Cycles docks across central London plus a growing cycleway network; black cabs and apps are everywhere but pricey.

Airport access

• Heathrow (LHR) ↗ On the Tube map: Piccadilly line (cheapest), Elizabeth line (fast to Paddington and the City), Heathrow Express to Paddington in 15 minutes.
• Gatwick (LGW) ↗ Not on the Tube — Thameslink and Southern trains or the Gatwick Express reach central London in about 30 minutes; contactless rail fares apply.

Good to know for newcomers

• Just tap a contactless card or phone — no ticket purchase needed; daily and weekly caps apply automatically (an Oyster card adds nothing for most adults).
• Never buy paper single tickets — they cost several times the contactless fare.
• The Tube largely stops around 00:30–05:00; the Night Tube runs on some lines Friday–Saturday, and night buses cover the rest.
• London has six airports — Heathrow and Gatwick have the best rail links; for Stansted or Luton budget extra time and coach or rail cost.

Commuting & where to live

• Zone 1 rent carries a heavy premium; the classic balance is Zone 2–3 near a Tube or Elizabeth line stop.
• Judge a flat by its line, not just its zone — a Zone 3 home on a fast direct line often beats a closer one needing two changes.
• Employers commonly offer interest-free season-ticket loans and Cycle to Work schemes — ask before you sign a lease.
• Commuter towns (Reading, St Albans, Sevenoaks…) cut rent but rail season tickets run to hundreds of pounds a month — price the total.
