Good to know for newcomers
- You need a myki (or contactless via the app) for trains, buses and trams outside the CBD — but trams inside the Free Tram Zone are genuinely free.
- Fares are half-price across Victoria until 1 Jan 2027 — the daily cap is about AU$5.70 right now, so exploring is cheap.
- Touch on AND off on trains and buses; on trams you only touch on (and never inside the Free Tram Zone).
- From the airport, SkyBus is the direct option until the rail link opens — allow extra time versus a train city.
Commuting & where to live
- Rent falls with distance from the CBD; inner suburbs on a train line (Richmond, Footscray, Brunswick) balance cost against a 15–30 min commute.
- A home on a single direct train or tram line to work beats a “closer” spot needing a bus-plus-train transfer.
- Living in or near the Free Tram Zone means much of your daily movement is genuinely free — a real budget factor for CBD workers.
- Driving in is common from outer suburbs but parking is costly and freeways clog — most inner-city workers ride the train or tram.
