City Overview
Nagasaki City, the capital of Nagasaki Prefecture, is a port city on the western edge of Kyushu, set between mountains and sea. During Edo-era isolation it was Japan’s sole window to the world (Dejima), and Chinese, Portuguese and Dutch influences blend into a strong exotic character (Glover Garden, World Heritage churches). It was also the second city struck by an atomic bomb, with a Peace Park of remembrance. Shipbuilding has a long history. Costs are low, and its slopes and night view are famous (one of the world’s three great night views) — a livable port city of distinctive historic charm in western Kyushu.
