Getting Around Singapore

MRT + buses cover the whole island. EZ-Link card works everywhere. Grab is the dominant ride-hailing app. No car needed—COE certificate makes car ownership very expensive.

Main transport

  • MRT & LRT Six MRT lines plus LRT feeders reach most of the island, with trains every 2–5 minutes; fares are distance-based.
  • Public buses A dense network with the same distance-based card fares — tap in and out with the same card as the MRT.
  • Taxis & ride-hailing Grab and street taxis are plentiful and metered — the standard fallback after the MRT closes around midnight.
  • Cycling & walking Park-connector paths suit short hops; the heat and humidity make transit the default for longer trips.

Typical costs

MRT / bus single (card) S$1.28–2.57 by distance (adult card/contactless, from Dec 2025)
Adult Monthly Travel Pass S$122 unlimited MRT, LRT and basic buses — typical commuters paying per ride spend ≈ S$80–100/month
Changi to downtown MRT ≈ S$2 in 45–60 min (change at Tanah Merah); taxi ≈ S$25–45 in 20–30 min
Taxi flag-down ≈ S$4.40–4.80 plus distance; airport, peak and late-night surcharges apply

Airport access

  • Changi Airport (SIN) MRT from Terminals 2/3 (change at Tanah Merah for the city, 45–60 min); public and premium buses, and taxis reach downtown in 20–30 minutes.

Good to know for newcomers

  • Tap any contactless bank card or phone (SimplyGo) on MRT and buses — fares match a stored-value card; no tourist card needed.
  • On buses, tap out when you alight — forgetting charges you the maximum distance fare.
  • The MRT stops around midnight; after that it is Grab or taxi — budget for it on late nights.
  • No eating or drinking on trains and in stations — fines apply; finish your kopi before the fare gates.

Commuting & where to live

  • Car ownership is deliberately expensive (the COE certificate can cost more than the car itself) — plan life around the MRT map, not a car.
  • Rent tracks MRT proximity — homes near interchange stations command a clear premium.
  • The island is small: most commutes run 20–45 minutes — a direct line to your workplace matters more than raw distance.
  • HDB towns on the East–West and North–South lines (Tampines, Jurong East…) offer the classic rent-vs-commute balance.
