Getting Around Stockholm

SL runs the metro (Tunnelbana, famous for its station art), commuter trains, trams and buses under one fare — the single ticket allows free transfers for 75 minutes. A July 2026 government subsidy cut the monthly pass to kr 530. The airport has the fast Arlanda Express plus a cheaper commuter train.

• Cycling A strong lane network and bike-share make cycling popular spring–autumn; winter cuts it back, but many ride year-round.

Airport access

• Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) ↗ The main airport ~40 km north: the Arlanda Express reaches the centre in ~20 min, the SL commuter train is cheaper (~40 min), and Flygbussarna coaches also run.
• Bromma (BMA) ↗ The small close-in airport for some domestic flights — a short bus or Flygbussarna ride from the centre.

Good to know for newcomers

• Tap a contactless card or the SL app on every mode — one ticket covers metro, train, tram, bus and ferry with 75 minutes of free transfers.
• If you commute, the kr 530 monthly pass (halved by the 2026 subsidy) is excellent value — a big change from the old ~kr 1,025.
• The metro’s art stations are worth riding for their own sake — many call it the world’s longest art gallery.
• From Arlanda, skip the pricey Express if you’re watching money — the commuter train costs a fraction, just add the station fee.

Commuting & where to live

• The first-hand rental market runs on a famous years-long queue (Bostadsförmedlingen); most newcomers start in the second-hand market, which is pricier.
• Rent falls with distance from the inner islands; suburbs on a metro or pendeltåg line (Solna, Sundbyberg, Nacka) balance cost and a 15–35 min commute.
• Transit is fast and reliable, so a home near any metro or commuter line makes for a short, predictable commute even from far out.
• Winter darkness and cold make a short walk to a warm station matter — factor it in when choosing between similar places.
