Getting Around Vancouver

SkyTrain + buses cover Greater Vancouver. Compass card accepted everywhere. Walkable and bike-friendly. Car useful in suburbs.

Main transport

• SkyTrain ↗ Driverless Expo, Millennium and Canada lines cross the region fast; tap on with a Compass card or a contactless bank card.
• Buses & SeaBus A wide bus network (always a 1-zone fare) plus the SeaBus passenger ferry across Burrard Inlet to North Vancouver in ~12 minutes.
• West Coast Express A commuter rail line running peak-hour trains between downtown and the eastern suburbs (Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, Mission).
• Cycling & Mobi bikes Extensive seawall and protected-lane network; Mobi bike-share covers the downtown peninsula and near neighbourhoods.

Airport access

• Vancouver International (YVR) ↗ On the Canada Line SkyTrain: ~25 min to downtown, with a C$6.50 AddFare only when leaving the airport; taxis and ride-hail also available.

Good to know for newcomers

• Tap a contactless bank card or phone straight onto SkyTrain, bus and SeaBus — a Compass card is optional and works the same way.
• Time your trips: after 6:30 pm and on weekends everything is a cheap 1-zone fare, no matter how many zones you cross.
• Going to the airport is free of the surcharge — the C$6.50 AddFare only applies when you tap out leaving a Sea Island station.
• The SeaBus is a genuine commute (and a lovely ride) to North Vancouver — one fare covers the connecting bus and SkyTrain.

Commuting & where to live

• Rent inside downtown and the West Side is the steepest; SkyTrain suburbs (Burnaby, New West, Surrey Central) balance cost against a 25–45 min ride.
• Living within one zone of work saves real money — but the after-6:30 pm/weekend 1-zone rule softens cross-zone trips for many schedules.
• Rain, not snow, is the year-round factor — a home with a short covered walk to SkyTrain beats a longer bus feeder in a Vancouver winter.
• Cars are expensive to run and park; many downtown and SkyTrain-corridor households go car-free or car-light on transit plus Mobi bikes.
