Scholarships and financial aid for studying in Japan — government, university, and international programs.
Japan's principal government scholarship is the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship, offered since 1954 across seven categories (research students, undergraduates, Japanese-studies students, and more). You apply either through a Japanese embassy in your home country (embassy recommendation) or through a Japanese university (university recommendation). JASSO additionally runs honours scholarships for privately-financed students. The official Study in Japan portal is the central guide.
- The MEXT Scholarship covers tuition, a monthly stipend and travel, and spans research (graduate), undergraduate and several other student categories.
- Two application routes: embassy recommendation (apply via the Japanese embassy in your country) or university recommendation (apply through a Japanese university).
- JASSO offers the Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship and exchange-support scholarships for privately-financed international students.
- Many Japanese universities and local governments offer their own scholarships — check each institution and prefecture.
