Malaysian citizenship by naturalisation is highly restrictive. Under the Federal Constitution, an applicant must generally have resided in Malaysia for a long qualifying period (broadly ten of the previous twelve years, including the year before applying), be of good character, have an adequate knowledge of Malay, and intend to reside permanently. Malaysia does not generally permit dual citizenship. The National Registration Department / Ministry of Home Affairs handles applications.
