Portugal reformed its nationality law in 2025: the residence requirement for naturalisation rose from five years to seven years for nationals of EU and Portuguese-speaking (CPLP) countries and ten years for other nationals. Applicants also need an A2 level of Portuguese and good standing. Portugal permits dual citizenship. Nationality is handled by the Institute of Registries and Notariat (under the Ministry of Justice).
