South Korea's AI Basic Act (Framework Act on the Development of AI and Establishment of Trust) took effect on 22 January 2026, making Korea one of the first countries with a comprehensive AI law. It promotes AI development while setting trust and safety obligations (e.g. for high-impact and generative AI, including transparency/labelling). The government has indicated a roughly one-year grace period before administrative fines. The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) leads.
